Chapter Fourteen

Jerrick

Chase, Ransom, and I stop when the wall comes into view, just visible through the trees. We’ve been hiking for hours after leaving the truck a few miles away, and now that we’ve finally reached our destination, adrenaline courses through my veins like fire. Altair is identical to Antares except for the size. The wall is the same – fifteen feet high and made of the same materials – but it seems to go on forever.

“It has to be twice as big as Antares,” Chase says, keeping his voice low.

“A little more,” Ransom tells him. “The population, too.”

Chase’s only response is a low whistle.

“What’s our next move?” I ask, anxious to get things moving.

The sooner we have a solid plan, the sooner we take Altair.

Ransom pulls a small map of the colony from his pocket and unfolds it, and I move closer to his side. “We need to find the back entrance.”

With the train tracks to our right, it’s easy to figure out where we are on the map. What isn’t easy is trying to determine how far we’ll have to travel to reach it.

“Let’s get going, then,” I say, motioning for the others to follow as I head off.

We hike through the woods, keeping to the edge so we can see the wall but being certain to stay within the cover of the trees. Traveling like this transports me back to those first few days of freedom after we fled Antares. We started on the train, but when it stopped, we were forced to go the rest of the way on foot. Following the tracks during the day, camping in the woods at night. There were five of us. Van and Chase, Reed, and Drea and me. Being on our own, being able to hold hands, to sleep in each other’s arms at night, had felt like the beginning of a dream come true, and I’d been so happy and hopeful for the first time in more than a decade.

How did it turn into such a nightmare so fast?

Chase shifts the tent he’s carrying, pulling it higher on his shoulder, and his gaze straight ahead when he says, “Reed should be here.”

A pang of guilt shoots through me at his words. Of course, he’s thinking about Reed. Our friend who left Antares with us, who had an unlucky streak that put him in danger more than once while we were traveling and eventually got him killed when he was out on a run. I should be thinking about him, too, but it’s nearly impossible to drag my thoughts from Drea these days.

“He’d be happy knowing Morena is okay,” Ransom says.

“Yeah.” Chase blows out a long breath. “Maybe if she’d come with us in the beginning, he’d still be alive. You know? I mean, maybe he wouldn’t have wanted to go out on runs if she was with him, or maybe he would have been more careful.”

“Or maybe things would have turned out exactly the same,” I say, my bitter words as biting as the chilly breeze blowing through the forest.
